HISTORY

WHAT IS BN FOOTBALL?

BN in BN Football Academy stands for Barotac Nuevo—a town in Iloilo, Philippines, fondly known as the Football Capital of the Philippines. Barotac Nuevo has long been the cradle of football excellence in the country, supplying countless top players to major universities and the national team.

OUR PROUD LEACY AND MISSION

This is where my journey began—on dusty fields, learning to kick the ball, growing in skill and character. Because of Barotac’s football culture, I was able to play for the Philippines National Team and later serve as coach for the Philippines Youth National Team.

To honor this heritage, I founded BN Football Academy in 2022 in Richmond, B.C. Our academy carries forward the values of Barotac—team spirit, discipline, community support, humility, and passion. We train not just players, but well-rounded individuals who embrace the love of the beautiful game and the character it builds.

OUR STORY

OUR STORY

A Glimpse into Barotac Nuevo’s (BN) History

Barotac Nuevo was originally a barrio called Malutac, part of the municipality of Dumangas. According to local legend, in exchange for the prized white stallion Tamasak, Don Simon Protacio negotiated with the Spanish colonial Governor-General to elevate Malutac into its own town. That’s how Malutac became Barotac Nuevo—“baro” (Spanish for mud) combined with “lutac” (Hiligaynon for mud), plus “Nuevo” to distinguish it from nearby Barotac Viejo.

The town was officially founded in 1810–1811 under the leadership of Don Simon Raymundo Protacio Belen and later recognized as a parish in 1710, reflecting its deep-rooted colonial and religious heritage.

Despite its modest size, Barotac Nuevo thrived as an agricultural community, known for rice, sugarcane, and fish ponds, but it stood out most for one passion: football.

The town’s football culture took off in the 1920s when the Monfort brothers introduced the sport, further fueled by the legacy of Iloilo-born Paulino Alcantara, one of the earliest Filipino stars in international football. Over time, football became woven into daily life—fields replaced plazas, every street formed a team, and community support for young players became the norm.

Generations of young athletes from Barotac Nuevo have earned scholarships at major Philippine universities and earned spots on regional and national teams, thanks to the town’s collective commitment to the sport.
